About this deal

Four AA batteries, not supplied, are needed to power the circuits so we made sure we had a fresh pack before starting. Contents: transparent assembly workstation, connectors, buzzer, touch plate, photo resistor, LEDs, battery units, loudspeaker, music IC, alarm IC, sound IC, motor unit, propellor, antenna coil, lamp, bulb, microphone, power amp IC, resistors, capacitors, transistors, diode and full colour instruction booklet. This set never gets boring once you have finished making all of the items in the booklet you can always start making up your own.

So when we were asked to try out the Hot Wires Electronics Set from John Adams we were delighted to give it a go – and the children loved it, especially making a helicopter! The set was designed by the Royal Society for Chemistry so the numbers are real (no ‘Cool Ratings’ here) and players learn about the elements while enjoying the game. It is sturdy, spares are available and it is likely to last for generations of children (and their adults) despite the move to electronics being more 'micro' orientated now. Simply snap together the component blocks and discover 100 action packed experiments involving light, sound and movement. If you have a little chemist at home who wants to turn your kitchen into a lab, here’s a list of basics to get them going. Google: Google's policy requires identification of each party that receives end users’ personal data as a consequence of using a Google product. And one last thing I’ve noticed with both children is that – as well as learning about electronics – they’re also working on their problem solving and critical thinking skills. Simply follow the full colour step by step instructions to become your very own resident electronics wizard. This really is good to get children thinking, learning and experimenting with electrics in a safe and educational way.

Google also requires prominent and easily accessible information about the use of end users’ personal data. This magazine was created by the fabulous Jenny Inglis (who used to be a science presenter on Blue Peter) and it is full of interesting facts, experiments to try and interviews with real scientists. It is immediately accessible; anyone with no prior knowledge of electronics can make something that works within minutes of opening the box. We will use your data to personalise and improve your experience on our digital platforms and to send you relevant products and offers we think you'll love. Easy to use and versatile for a variety of play options that include learning and invention at the same time. With it having been my birthday the day before they couldn’t believe it when they pressed the finished doorbell, and the tune was that of ‘Happy Birthday’ which none of us were expecting and it was a pleasant surprise.

That is all good and kids should be encouraged to learn as much as possible, especially as their brains are like sponges. Which is why I was so keen to get my hands on the John Adams Hot Wires set, which looked like everything his online lessons weren’t; fun, exciting, colourful, inspiring. She’s managed to expand some sets with further pieces to change the pitch of the sound that she made. I was also pleased to see that – as well as this simplified way of identifying the components – they also have the proper electrical symbol on them too.

Miss M can use it independently and create some amazing things that both children enjoy looking at and playing with. Our policy requires consent for cookies that are used for measurement purposes and consent for the use of personal data for personalised ads.

Of course, it’s not really x-ray vision but it looks pretty real; it’s 3D, it moves with your body and even has a beating heart. It is a comprehensive kit with capacitors, resistors, transistors, diodes, bulbs, LEDs, IC units and more. However, download the free app on your phone or tablet, point it at the T-shirt and you can see inside your own body! Over time, we have spent a small fortune on various microscopes that didn’t quite fit the bill…until we found this one.
