About this deal

The amount of available gain is very similar to the Centaur. With the Gain knob maxed out I coaxed rich, harmonic overdrive tones out of single-coils that evoked thoughts of Eric Johnson and vintage Larry Carlton. And unlike many TS-style ODs at high-gain settings, the Soul Food’s low end was defined full of presence. For me, the Soul Food has a more vintage sound, with all of its energy in those upper mids. With the BD-2, I’m hearing higher highs and lower lows. I don’t think it’s as focused as the Soul Food is. It sounds much more modern, if you like. For the rest of this review, forget about the Klon Centaur. I’m going to review the Soul Food just like any other pedal and that’s the way you should assess your potential gear. And I think it works even better with my Les Paul in the middle position (which is where I like to live): Les Paul middle position > Soul Food

With the right setting, the Soul Food is the kind of tone shaping tool you can keep on all the time. It’s relatively transparent, it’s got plenty of headroom, but it will generate colorful dirty tones as well as many of the best low-to-mid gain stomps out there. Electro Harmonix has delivered a well-made and affordable alternative to drinking the Klon Kool-Aid. And with the thousands of dollars you have left over, you can turn your attention to the pursuit of other mythical beasts. I’m not quite done yet, though. There’s one more pedal that I want to compare the Soul Food against today. … vs The Boss BD-2 Blues Driver It becomes clear why transparent overdrives are worthwhile only after you try an overdrive pedal that isn’t transparent. If a pedal dramatically changes your tone either by rolling off the high and low frequencies or by giving the mid frequencies a big boost, it can make it feel like you’re playing a different rig – which could be good or bad. Think of transparent overdrives as a way to enhance your existing tone rather than dramatically changing it.

The Klon Centaur is one of the most hyped guitar pedals in existence. It wasn’t the first and neither will it be the last. CoffeeAndKlon is my (irregular!) Sunday morning magazine series, where I talk about whatever’s on my mind right now. There’s always coffee, and there’s normally chat about the Klon and its many competitors. The EHX Soul Food So that’s why I’ve finally added the EHX Soul Food to my pedal shelf. But is it going to stay for long? That depends on what it sounds like. What Did You Buy? Again, I think this a matter of taste rather than objective points. You may well prefer the more rounded tone of the Soul Food. Compared To The Wampler Tumnus Mini The Soul Food, Tumnus Mini and Wampler Belle on my pedalboardThis type of overdrive doesn’t suit all guitarists. I usually prefer a more rounded out tone rather than a bright and sparkly tone. I do enjoy using the Soul Food, but for a lot of what I play, it doesn’t suit my tone needs. If you’re a metal guitarist or any style that doesn’t fit what you hear in the video earlier, then this type of overdrive might not meet your needs. How to get the most out ofthe Soul Food A truly authentic pedal that mirrors the ability of the Klon Centaur is now available to you at a fraction of the price, so don't delay, cook up a storm with the Elecrtro Harmonix Soul Food! Key Features: Many of the pedals I’m using today have buffers in them. The Boss pedals have an always-on buffer. I’ve got the buffers switched on in the Soul Food, the Klon KTR and the Tumnus Deluxe at all times. Inside the EHX Soul Food, showing the Buffer / True Bypass switch

The fact that it is a transparent overdrive implies that you’re not going to fully change your existing setup just like a less transparent one would. You can add it to the pedalboard, and it will greatly compliment your tone. Ever dreamt of playing through a glitsy, transparent overdrive pedal such as the Klon Centaur but have always struggled to justify the rather out-of-reach price tag? If so, look no further, Electro-Harmonix now bring you the Soul Food overdrive pedal, developed to provide you with spacious soundscapes and extreme clarity and definition.

The EHX Soul Food was not the first Klon klone, and it certainly isn’t the best, but it is perhaps the most important. It’s taken me a few years to find one at a price I was willing to pay. These pedals are very popular, and at times second-hand prices have been higher than the retail price. And, while brand new ones are affordable … I haven’t been a fan of what I’ve heard in previous demos. That’s why I’ve held out until I was able to buy one for about half the current retail price. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at just how usable it is. It certainly isn’t the piece of garbage that I was expecting it to be. At the end of the day, though, it doesn’t quite sound like a Klon. That’s both good and bad. It gives me an option that I didn’t have before (which I like). If you have a valve amp and enjoy playing the styles this type of overdrive is suitable for (eg: if you’re a metal player, this isn’t the pedal for you), then this is a no-brainer. Even if you have a solid state amp I still feel it’s a great pedal worthy of most guitarist’s pedalboards. What this DOES sound like is a nice clean low gain overdrive. Think that barely broken up bluesy sound, something like "Jenny Don't Be Hasty" by Paolo Nutini kinda sound. It says Overdrive/Distortion, but that's not really accurate; it's a nice overdrive, but even with the Drive knob DIMED, it doesn't really cross over into distortion like a DS-1 or a Rat. Okay, so that's out of the way. What this thing does do and do very well is fatten up clean tones and give you everything from clean to overdrive with your guitar's volume knob.
