Just a little mention to the gender too, Jimmy is transgender and that addition to the story brought some interesting talk in regards of the band and fans etc. When you do it right you get a character that feels real to the reader, that translates to the world in a good, organic way.The writing was good, I read the whole thing in almost 1 day and I think this kind of prose works best for contemporaries where it is good but not too poetic as to be distracting.

At a decent 400 pages, the novel packs in a lot, both in terms of themes explored and story told, even if it does take place over the course of just a few days. From this point of view, it perhaps makes sense that teenage fans construct their sense of self around these friendly, smiley, (and maybe in love with you! And you’re very close to each other and have a unique bond which many fans will ship because they think there has to be more to it. But I can’t tell you how much I Was Born For This has given me a fuller understanding and appreciation of the complexities of what being a fan means.When everything is bad, when I wake up and want to go back to sleep and never wake up, you’re there for me. Alice Oseman captured it so well and I loved that by inventing Juliet and Angel she also gave room to the fandom side that’s not just screaming and fainting fangirls/boys.
