Bernier, France, (1998), Du paratexte au texte: lire l’Amérique dans Volkswagen Blues de Jacques Poulin, Laval, Faculté des Lettres Université Laval, 72. The main character of the novel is Mr. Jacques Waterman, who happens to have the same name as the author of the novel. Once a proclaimed writer, Jacques is now on this road trip to "discover something new". Upon waking one morning, he meets a young woman, with whom he converses in conversation. The woman's name is Pitsemine, and she has ancestry to the Canadian First Nations. Pitsemine continues on the trip with JacquesThe pastel Fjord Blue (L 434) was available from 1958, and Capri also made a re-appearance at about that time. The somewhat understated Slate Blue (L 361) was offered from 1959 alongside the equally sombre Indigo Blue (L 436). Gulf Blue (L 390) came along in 1960, and the popular and long lasting Sea Blue (L 360) followed from August 1963 until 1966 (below). The following manuscript was originally prepared for FREN*3200 Quebec Novel, and later translated from the original French under the supervision of Professor Stéphanie Nutting, French Studies, School of Languages and Literatures, College of Arts. This is a simply wonderful story that I am so pleased to have encountered in a course on Travel Narratives. I won't lie, my favorite character may be the cat, but that's because he is such a cute addition to the story that I cannot help myself. urn:lcp:volkswagenblues0000poul:epub:b8311e93-3413-4b9d-85f5-ea6b67f2b137 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier volkswagenblues0000poul Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t58f1fz7t Invoice 1652 Isbn 0771071582

The song became an anthem for those longing for freedom and searching for their place in the world. 8. Are there any covers or adaptations of Volkswagen Blues? Into the mid-‘90s and VW again freshened their palette with the addition of a variety of exciting new blues, including Mint (LB6U), Calypso (LA6Z), Smoke Blue (LH5Y), Jamaica Blue (LL5V) as above left and Steel (LB5T) above right. Alas, things all became a bit more reserved when it came to later blues, with most being somewhat dark and anonymous metallics.

Ocean Blue (L 57) came crashing in in 1976, accompanied by Barrier Blue (L 52) a year later. Florida Blue (LA5A) below made its debut in 1979 and was available on Beetles as well as Polos and Golfs from that era. River Blue (LK6V) was a lovely green tinged metallic from this late air-cooled, early water-cooled era. Postcolonialism in North America: Imaginative Colonization in Henry David Thoreau’s “A Yankee in Canada” and Jacques Poulin’s “Volkswagen Blues” Incredibly, the first metallic blue (L 35) appeared in March 1953, although it only lasted for around a year so it’s somewhat rare. Gilberto Gil was inspired to write Volkswagen Blues by his own experiences and observations of life. The song reflects his deep longing for freedom and his desire to explore new horizons. 2. What does the Volkswagen Beetle symbolize in the song? Therefore, in conclusion, it is evident that “Volkswagen Blues” has far more depth than just being a story about a man and his friend voyaging around North America looking for his long lost brother, but a sophisticated, politically and culturally metaphorical novel about the relationships amongst the ethnically diverse populations of North America and the future of the first setting of the novel, Quebec. We can deduce from the many aspects of the story, such as language and characters, that like much Québécois literature of this era, there are prominent political features and messages throughout the entire novel. Gilberto Gil, who was also a key figure in the tropicalismo movement, uses powerful imagery and metaphors in the song to convey his message. The mention of the Volkswagen Beetle in the title serves as a symbol of both nostalgia and freedom. The car in the song represents a means of escape, a vehicle that can take us on a transformative journey, both physically and spiritually. a “In Volkswagen Blues, […] New France and contemporary North America cross and intertwine with one another.”The novel is set in Canada during the 1970s. With this period, the author explains, came a large group of French-speaking Quebecians who thought it wise to try to declare independence from the rest of Canada. As we know, this did not end up happening, but it plays a role in conflict in the story. The idea of secession from the country isn't the main problem in the story, rather, the main ideas that each person considers in times like that, like cultural unity and self-actualization. In the early ‘80s VW added Cornat Blue (LH5H), Medium Blue (LH5G), Tarpon (LE5Y) and Helios (LA5Y) as well as Regatta (LB5Y) and Lago (LE5B). Frost (LE5U) and Monaco (LA5D) came along in 1983, followed by Strato (LA5Z) a year later.
