Miyazaki stated that the story was initially intended to be set in 1955, however, the team was not thorough in the research and instead worked on a setting "in the recent past". [6] :33 The film was originally set to be an hour long but during production it grew to respond to the social context, including the reason for the move and the father's occupation. [6] :54 Eight animators worked on the film, which was completed in eight months. [11]

Right from the start I noticed small changes in the story and was surprised but still okay with it. Soon however the changes grew bigger and they started to bother me more and more. The feelings I get from watching Totoro is happiness and a general calm. The book didn't give me those feelings. The biggest reason for that I think is the change in the main character, Satsuki, and her father, Tatsuo. Book-Satsuki is too grown up and book-Tatsuo to focused on his job, and not enough on his daughters. Tonari no Totoro (1996) - Video Sales". The Numbers. Reducing an animated masterpiece, one in which half the joys are stored in the visuals, is probably a losing proposition—one complicated further through an overlapping layer of English localization. It is also rich with human comedy in the way it observes the two remarkably convincing, lifelike little girls... It is a little sad, a little scary, a little surprising and a little informative, just like life itself. It depends on a situation instead of a plot, and suggests that the wonder of life and the resources of imagination supply all the adventure you need. [63] Comments, Jeremy Konrad | (March 16, 2023). Tetsuya Endo noted numerous animation techniques were used in the film. For example, ripples were designed with "two colors of high-lighting and shading" and the rain for My Neighbor Totoro was "scratched in the cels" and superimposed for it to convey a soft feel. [6] :156 The animators stated one month was taken to create the tadpoles, which included four colors; the water for it was also blurred. [6] :154 Music [ edit ] Denison, Rayna (October 22, 2015). I'm a big fan of Studio Ghibli movies and have great respect for the amazing artist that is Hayao Miyazaki. The way he tells stories in his movies is beyond me. As a big Ghibli fan I can say that this book is unmissable on your bookshelf. I watched the movie around 4 or 5 times by now but the book has a fair amount of extra content. Biased review here. I love this movie. I own sweaters, hoodies, pullovers with Totoro on it. My phone case, purse and wallet are Totoro. So of course, Im giving this book 5 stars.

Tokuma Shoten released My Neighbor Totoro on VHS and LaserDisc in August 1988. [39] Buena Vista Home Entertainment Japan (now Walt Disney Japan) reissued the VHS on June 27, 1997, as part of their series Ghibli ga Ippai. [40] Disney released the film on Blu-ray in Japan on 2012. [41] This romanticized image of rural living is also presented through the characters. Satsuki and Mei aren't just here to meet Totoro and go on wild adventures; they're also adapting to a country lifestyle. Early on, the story makes a big deal about Satsuki learning to do housework the old-fashioned way, and later contrasts this with the sheltered life of her city-bred Tokyo relatives. Mei, who is first portrayed as shy and afraid of her new environment, eventually grows into the true heroine of the story—a child of nature, who views Totoro and friends not with skepticism but a welcoming sense of wonder. The supporting cast of villagers also adds a dimension not seen in the movie: they interact with the main characters frequently, creating an atmosphere of country hospitality, and (surprisingly) give the book a more cohesive ending than the anime. According to the environmental journal Ambio, My Neighbor Totoro "has served as a powerful force to focus the positive feelings that the Japanese people have for satoyama and traditional village life". The film's central character Totoro was used as a mascot by the Japanese campaign "Totoro Hometown Fund Campaign", which aimed to preserve areas of satoyama in Saitama Prefecture. [84] The fund, started in 1990 after the film's release, held an auction in August 2008 at Pixar Animation Studios to sell over 210 original paintings, illustrations, and sculptures inspired by My Neighbor Totoro. [85]The movie succeeds because there is no conventional plot. Miyazaki had the vision and intuition to divine the proper balance between story and sensation, to tell his tale without really saying anything at all. It’s what makes Totoro one of his greatest achievements. My Neighbor Totoro Film Comic, Vol. 4". Viz Media. Archived from the original on May 11, 2021 . Retrieved January 24, 2020.
