About this deal

And there in the middle of it all is Alix Summer with her big smile and her big teeth, her hair that catches the light, her simple gold chain with something hanging from it that skims her gleaming collarbones whenever she moves. The characterisation is excellent and I’m going to say little about either Alix or Josie as that is one of the joys of the book to discover for yourself! Kevin Kenerly narrates this landmark 1911 novel of Black America in which free-spirited Zora and her lover Bles grapple with hardship and poverty at the dawn of the 20th century. All is revealed when Alix becomes the subject of a true crime podcast to be featured in a Netflix documentary in 2020. In Alix, her birthday twin, Josie sees an opportunity to change it all by convincing Alix a couple days later to feature her in her next podcast, promising to share her secrets and show listeners her transformation.

Additionally, her use of mixed media, with the sections from the Netflix series, was amazingly well done; round of applause. Sure, that particular character did meet their fate in this book, however, why did they get a redemption arc/sympathy. One of them is Alix Summers; famous podcaster promoting aspiring women who take their second changes for life to achieve bigger things.it didn't save the book 😬 the last 20% was very anticlimactic and some twists just ruined the book for me. So we also know, right away, that something very bad happened to Alix’s husband after he was picked up in the opening pages! I believe the ending was designed to give the reader some authority over how they perceived not only the entire story, but also what happens after the final page is turned, although I would have been more satisfied with full closure. While celebrating her 45th birthday she bumps into Josie who shares the same birthday, and birthplace.

A thrilling thriller, a chilling reminder to pick your friends carefully, and an immersive read that should keep you hooked. Slowly she starts to realize that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home. Then the narrative jumps around between Alix and Josie’s “present day” perspectives, as well as clips from the Netflix documentary and Alix’s eventual podcast. Now Josie thinks he's a pedophile and has been sneaking into their daughter's room during the night. I am a huge fan of Lisa Jewell, and this was right up there in terms of thrill, fast pace, plot, writing style and characterisation – yes but that doesn’t mean I liked the characters. But it was, at the same time, the best fun ever and Jessica Jones now feels like a part of me forever, definitely one of my favorite characters I’ve written to date. Alix Summer, with her seemingly perfect life as a podcaster and her seemingly perfect family in their beautiful house, and Josie, a woman from a council estate with a past filled with abuse, grooming and who-knows-what other horrors. A life lived in fast-forward and now, apparently, she should peak and crest and then come slowly, contentedly down the other side, but it doesn’t feel as if there ever was a peak, rather an abyss formed of trauma that she keeps circling and circling with a knot of dread in the pit of her stomach.

This started very slow for me, and I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but once Alix’s podcast about Josie got underway, things started to get juicy! Lisa Jewell's first novel, Ralph’s Party, was published in 1999 and was the best-selling debut novel of the year. Your views on both of them undergo several U-turns via the plot revelations which makes for fascinating and at times, horrifying reading. While reading the book, I felt like the emoji that has both hands over their eyes but with their fingers spread so that the upcoming train wreck is slightly visible.Alix comes into her life at just the right time--a podcast host, she is the perfect woman to help Josie share her intriguing story. Lisa Jewell has been around the scene for a while now: this is her ELEVENTH thriller after making the transition from romance novels. One of the characters is an alcoholic, and it felt like they were given a free pass for their bad behavior, like I was expected to sympathize with them and understand why they behaved so poorly. Imagine if Lisa Jewell had chosen a different narrative structure from this novel and only told it from one point of view. The smile fixes on Josie’s face as she watches Alix Summer and her big group of friends, her red-haired husband with his arm draped loosely across the back of her chair, large platters of meats and breads being brought to their table and placed in front of them as if conjured out of thin air, the sound of them, the noise of them, the way they fill every inch of the space with their voices and their arms and their hands and their words.
