At the end of his life, in 1708, Guru Gobind Singh passed the mantle of the Guruship to the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. This ended the time of the physical Gurus of the Sikhs. And began the reign of the Shabad Guru, itself, as the Spiritual Light and Guide for the Sikh community.

They see it as more than a holy book, but as another guide that they respect in the same way, and a teacher showing them how to live their lives fully. Guru Granth Sahib is often classed as the 11th Sikh Guru. A western thinker offers a befitting epithet each to the 10 Gurus as a mark of their distinct individualities considered in totality. The qualities applied to the Gurus may not be incorrect but they do not suggest any comprehensive representation of the Guru under reference. However, it would make interesting reading to note how each Guru is viewed : Guru Nanak and the Boulder is a story that teaches us about how to get rid of our pride and by taking the teachings of the scriptures, accepting them, following them, it will bring inside us compassion, humility, truth and contentment. And these are the virtues we all need to live an honest life. Before his death, Guru Nanak appointed one of his Sikhs as the second Guru and entrusted him with the task of guiding the Sikh community. This tradition continued till the Tenth Guru, Gobind Singh (1666-1708) who established the Khalsa on Baisakhi 1699 AD and gave a distinct identity to the Sikhs; He baptized five Sikhs and named them Panj Pyare, after which the Guru himself baptized them at his request. Guru Gobind Singh ended the tradition of appointing human successor by establishing Guru Granth Sahib on the highest seat and living Guru before ascending the Sach Khand.

Guru is a Sanskrit term for a mentor, guide or expert. For Sikhs however, the gurus were more than just teachers. They believe the gurus are messengers from God. In Sanskrit, the word guru literally translates to 'the dispeller of darkness'.
Guru Angad is the second Sikh Guru. He was born in Sarai Matta, India. His father’s name was Pheru Mall Ji and his mother was Daya Kaur Ji. He married Mata Khivi. They had two sons Dassu Ji and Dattu Ji and two daughters Bibi Amro Ji and Bibi Anokhi Ji.Guru Arjan was born in 1563. A great scholar, Guru Arjan compiled the scriptures of the Sikhs, known as the Adi Granth. He tried to teach as many people the scriptures as possible, so included it in hymns about Muslim saints too.
