About this deal

There’s an outright slice of hi-octane fun. Walter gets horny, if you will (in the Southside Johnny sense…) on the brilliant “Leave It All Behind”. “Responsibility, politely declined” he sings and does so in such a way that suggests he wouldn’t be so polite if you bothered him again. Trout's career began on the Jersey coast scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s. He then decided to relocate to Los Angeles where he became a sideman for John Lee Hooker, Percy Mayfield, Big Mama Thornton, Joe Tex, and many others. day ago Two Door Cinema Club have announced a massive concert for summer 2024 with a show at Custom House Square, Belfast on Thursday 15th August 2024. There’s a deeply personal couple to end things too. “Hey Mama” is a match for anything Neil Young ever did, as he pleads to his mother and thanks her for all she did. While “Destiny” is very much a love song to his wife. A beautiful breeze wafts in almost and this one is the one that anchors everything. That makes the “Ride” worth it, to Walter. He will also be touring the UK this summer, calling through Chester (13 Jun), Buxton (14 Jun),Brighton (16 Jun), London (17 Jun), Holmfirth (18 Jun), Edinburgh (19 Jun), Bury St. Edmunds (20 Jun),Frome (21 Jun) and Southampton (22 Jun). By 1981, Trout had switched to West Coast boogie-blues titans Canned Heat for a period he diplomatically recalls as “turbulent”, but even this gig was topped three years later by a fantastical phone call from John Mayall, dangling the revered guitar slot in his iconic Bluesbreakers outfit. “As far as being a blues-guitar sideman, that gig is the pinnacle,” states Trout. “That’s Mount Everest. You could play with B.B. King or Buddy Guy, but you’re just gonna play chords all night. This guy features you. You get to play solos. He yells your name after every song, brings you to the front of the stage, and lets you sing. He creates a place for you in the world. Where do you go from there…?”

While his modern edge and sparkling energy are sure to electrify contemporary fans of the genre, the memories Trout bravely digs up about his dysfunctional childhood and unstable stepfather heavily shape this LP. Even Trout admits there were “times in this pandemic where I sunk into some pretty deep depressions”. So Many Sad Goodbye’s’ and ‘High is Low’ are the creme de la creme of mid-tempo blues splendour. Trouts vocals on the latter are especially good. It’s the kind of husky outpour that reminds us why sometimes the classic arrangements are the best. I think you can interpret this album title a few different ways,” he concludes. “I mean, this album is definitely a musical ride and I certainly tried to cover a lot of ground. But, really, life is kind of a ride too, isn’t it? And I want to live mine to the fullest.” The heavy blues of lead single “Ghosts” is a spirited opener as Trout lays bare his struggles of escaping the past and being constantly reminded of his mistakes. As always the guitar work is hypnotic and at times haunting – listen to how he holds the eerie, fading note at the end.

This album is obviously what I was going through mentally and emotionally,” he considers. “All I did was express it. I spent a lot of time crying, because I would dig down into my emotional core. I want my songs to have some sort of truth to them.” Some memories that Trout examines on ‘Ride’ are long-distant but eternally poignant. Photo taken in Los Angeles on 02/21/20. But five albums and a whole lot of determined re-learning later and Trout is more than he has ever been before in both music and himself. As we come up to a decade since Trouts time in hospital and subsequently in recovery, it feels like common knowledge that his post operation fortitude was not just to prove to the world that he could continue as he had, but because whatever makes him play like he does lingers in his bones refusing to be rid of. Usually they are there to tell me that the band are “stoked”, that it’s the best album of their career – I swear I want to be there for the one that says “yeah its quite good like, but its not a patch on our older stuff” – but not this one.Arriving on the US West Coast two weeks before sessions began, Trout settled to write the Ride material in his now-deserted house in Huntington Beach, California. But even in this beachside paradise, amongst the swaying palms and ocean breeze, the past came calling. But, however fast or far a man travels, he can never truly outrun his past. On the new album Walter Trout found himself eyeing the horizon and the green shoots of his triumphant late career. There was a new record deal with Mascot/Provogue. A move from California to Denmark with his beloved family. Even now, aged 70, Trout was still writing fresh chapters of his life story. Ordinary Madness was completed mere days before the US shutdown, its cathartic songcraft and themes of shared troubles couldn’t chime better with a period in which our souls and spirits are under fire from tumultuous global events.
