About this deal

Sarah Naughton tells us about her new book, You Better Watch Out, a dark, edge-of-your-seat thriller, out 12th October. We spoke to some of your favourite authors and illustrators to find out what books they’d recommend for children starting school in September. Whether your child is nervous about making friends or struggling to build…

The characters Niamh interacts with, all have warmth and by the end of the book, personally felt like they were my friends. I trusted them, I loved them, I adored them, but should I have trusted all of them? I personally wouldn’t have compared it to One of Us is Lying or This Lie Will Kill You but I guess that’s because they’re ya murder mysteries (but not very enjoyable ones in my opinion). I’d say if you like Dawn Kurtigah, Kat Ellis, Katherine Foxfield & Juno Dawson then you’ll love this book. And sure, I'll briefly skim over Jessica, Jasmine, Meghan and Will. Why? Because they were flat, one-dimensional walking tropes. Jessica was the classic "best friend", Jasmine was the classic "mean girl" (with a side dose of kleptomanic tendencies that is never explored??) , Meghan was the stereotypical "extroverted, adoring sister" and Will was the "wronged suspicious lanky dude" . And I think that about sums them up to be honest.I devoured both Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis and Good Girls Die First by Kathryn Foxfield. They both had that feeling reminiscent of a really good teen horror movie and I couldn’t put them down. I’m also excited for The Cousins by Karen McManus, as I have loved her previous books. Keep going. Learn and invest in yourself – whether that’s time to write, reading about the craft, taking a course, going on a retreat…you are the only person who can write your book. I really think the phrase ‘write what you love’ is important too – after eight years of trying, it’s what finally worked for me! It’s basically like a point horror book for modern readers and that might sound dismissive, but it’s honestly the highest praise I could give it and I LOVED IT! Sweet Valley Thrillers and Point Horror were my gateway drugs into reading adult books as my aunty saw me reading them & then gave me some of her Stephen King & James Herbert (and James Patterson) books to read aged 11/12 and that was it, I was hooked. I never stopped reading “kids books”, I just added adult books in and I think that’s why I still enjoy any age fiction nowadays. Then the ending - my biggest issue. In my opinion, the ending is simply one of the most crucial parts to a good murder mystery because it's mean to link all the clues and puzzle pieces previously foreshadowed, and tie it up in a satisfying knot.

One of Us is Lying meets This Lie Will Kill You but with a chilling supernatural twist that will keep you guessing until the very end . . . TikTok sensation Cynthia Murphy's debut The Last One to Die has been hailed "Point Horror for a new generation", winning the Redhill Trust Book Award and Lancashire Book of the Year 2022.PDF / EPUB File Name: The_Last_One_To_Die_-_Cynthia_Murphy.pdf, The_Last_One_To_Die_-_Cynthia_Murphy.epub Last One to Die by Cynthia Murphy is the first book I read this year, and my first 5 star as well. I am now confident that 2021 won’t be that bad. I knew I was going to enjoy it, I just didn’t expect to enjoy it this much. Huge thank you yo Kaleidoscope Tours and Scholastic Press, for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for my review. Last One to Die has been described as ‘point horror for the social media generation’. Were you a point horror fan? The plot of the book is gripping and well-paced. I loved how it wove in local mythology and history. I was constantly guessing and changing my mind about how it was all going to end!
