She can read ALL of the level 2 words and some more but she is having to read ALL the big books(6 I think), and all the little books (12 I think) before moving on to the next level. just make sure reading and listening to story are fun otherwise he will switch off completly then he will not be on any level !

Unfortunately so many parents do not seem to accept this and insist on plowing on through the stages. Ds2 starts reception in Sept and I suspect he might be a tougher nut to crack (may be a bit unfair - I don't really know yet I guess) and I can see that boring and uninspiring books aren't going to help with children that don't want to do it/are struggling in the first place. DD is 5 and in year one, she is reading level 3 with ease and teacher says she is ahead of many others in her class with her reading. I have 6 years experience of working in school I have yet to find a child who is motivated by the Ginn books they are a waste of shelf space in the library.

I did post on here over Christmas that DS had suddenly learned to read after struggling for the last two years (he's in Y2), but that does sound a bit of a dramatic jump. When mine were going through them, I often asked the teacher – what does it mean- where are they in relation to any score chart but they wouldn’t release that information to anyone. There are so many wonderful ones out there but as soon as they get to school, the schemes take over. My 6 year old son had the Oxford reading books (ie Biff, Chip and Kipper) in Reception class and half way through year 1.They send home stuff that is innapporpirate and suitable for year 5 or 6 or they send home stuff there is no point in bothering with.
