About this deal

When I first started watching 1987's Dirty Dancing — and I say "started" because I built it into my weekly routine, allowing it to become habit — Baby became an instant style inspiration. Baby Houseman, played by Jennifer Grey, clearly knew how to dress for the summer months, thereby arming me with a handful of outfit options for my favourite season. Since Baby's story arc starts at a place where she's modest and reserved and ends with her embracing her free-spirited, rebellious side, her clothes follow suit. You might be wondering why I was allowed to watch Dirty Dancing at around 6 or 7 years old. Despite growing up in a house with maybe eight TV stations in total, I remember I could turn on the television (seemingly unsupervised) on any random weekend afternoon and the classic summer love story would be playing. Was it age-appropriate? Nope. Did I actually understand the plotline? Not until high school. But to this day, it's still my favorite movie—and one of my top sources of summer style inspiration. How can you watch this movie and not want a tulle skirt? Mimic Baby’s practice outfit by pairing a girly, blush pink midi skirt with a boxy cropped tee. It doesn't hurt that despite the film being set in the 1960s, it's Jennifer Grey's Baby character whose wardrobe is much more timeless than distinctly set in a specific era. She relies on classic silhouettes and neutrals shades. Her outfits are practical (hello, secret dance rehearsals), but each is either somewhat sweet—a nod to her character's naivety—if not a bit more provocative—speaking more to Frances Houseman coming into her own maturity. To commemorate Dirty Dancing‘s 32nd anniversary, we asked Rosenfeld to relive her thought process for conceiving the wardrobe for the film’s favourite characters. ‘BABY’ HOUSEMAN Are you a fan of Dirty Dancing? About Me

Not technically a ‘main event’, but still an indispensable part of the film’s plot, L isa Houseman is Baby’s older sister and antithesis. The ultimate girlie-girl for whom looks are (almost) everything, Lisa is the ditzy daughter who thrives on attention and is in desperately want of a man. “ Baby was on her way to a really good college and Lisa was on her way to find a husband,” Rosenfeld surmises. “That’s what young women did. Find a husband, marry well.” Hair always perfectly groomed and wearing ensembles impeccably put-together, Lisa serves as a stark contrast to the nerd-like naïveté of her younger sister.
