About this deal

The nose of this remarkable Tawny Port is a harmonious marriage of flavours that have evolved and matured over two decades. Petersham Cellar was founded by Giovanni Mazzei from the Marchesi Mazzei, owner of the Castello di Fonterutoli since 1435, Tuscany and Lara Angelica Boglione from Petersham Nurseries, London. Savoury and rich on the palate, without losing the grip, it’s a combination of age and finesse, finishing long and fresh. An array of flavours, from delicate fruit and raisins, to toasted toffee and chocolate, with an outstanding aftertaste. Quinta do Ataíde is also the site of a new winery, which is designed to reduce its impact on the environment. The Douro is one of the wildest, most mountainous and rugged wine regions of Portugal, cut through in deep twists. This is the optimumage for most ports aged in carefully maintained casks rather than put intobottle at an early stage, as vintage port is.Like all other Churchill’s Ports, the component wines of this Tawny Port have been vinified in traditional granite lagares (treading tanks). This is the master blender’s quest for perfection, capturing the perfect balance between young and aged port wines being matured for over 20 years in seasoned oak casks that contain 543 litres of port, only being released once they have reached perfection. Fermentation takes place in vats (lagares) at a controlled temperature until it reaches the right degree of sweetness (baum). The Douro benefited both viticulturally and socially from her various projects, and Ferreira remains blessed with a superb range of vineyard holdings from which to craft their range of full, elegant ports.

The 'twenty years' is an average age and may be a blend of several vintages and indeed previous batches of 20 year old. Today, five Symington cousins share responsibility for every aspect of the company and personally make the Graham's wines.
