About this deal

Don't disregard the Px7 S2e, though. If you don't want to stretch to the sizeable asking price of the Px8, the S2e are a five-star alternative, especially if you crave the careful construction, tasteful aesthetic and supreme sound profile that has helped B&W make its name. The most immediately striking aspect of the PX7 sound is its energy and animation. No matter if you’re listening to a poverty-spec stream from Spotify’s free tier or a full-on, full-fat MQA-powered Tidal Masters file, the overall impression is of exuberance and enthusiasm.

A little surprisingly, Bowers has ditched the 3.5mm port found on the original PX7, so the S2 is left with just a single USB-C port for charging and creating a wired connection. USB-C to 3.5mm and USB-C to USB-C cables are included in the box and can be neatly stored in a compartment under a flap in the hard-shell carrying case that is supplied in the box. The P5 were the acclaimed British hi-fi brand’s first headphones, and I worked them to the bone. I wore through the leather on the magnetic earpads while discovering my love of '90s hip-hop, idolized the trumpet lines of Booker Little, and repeated the same songs over and over (and over) until I could play them just how my teachers wanted. Controls on carbon edition (Image credit: Regan Coule/Tom's Guide) Bowers & Wilkins PX7 review: Controls Cranked up to full volume for the experience the detail doesn’t disappear, though bass becomes a little more prominent. They go far louder than I could stand for a long time. The entire frequency range hangs together well, with nothing overstated and nothing struggling for representation. Tonality is clean, consistent and entirely convincing.

How good is the Bowers & Wilkins PX7’s microphone array?

Bluetooth connectivity comes courtesy of version 5.2, multipoint pairing is present and correct, and codec support is extensive, with SBC and AAC complemented by aptX, aptX HD and aptX Adaptive. Noticeable strides have been made in terms of their noise-cancelling performance, too, while the S2 charge faster, are more comfortable to wear and have better companion app support than the PX7. Theoretically, that means improved stability and latency between the headphones and your smartphone or tablet, in addition to the high-quality (24-bit) streaming aptX HD brought to the table. The rest of the drive unit is relatively unchanged bar tweaks to the motor system to account for the reduced mass of the new cone. SOUND LIKE NO OTHER: PX7 S2 uses custom-designed 40mm drive units, carefully angled inside each earcup for a truly focused, immersive listening experience. The result is headphone sound no rival can match. The PX7 feature 43.6mm drivers, the largest in the B&W’s headphone range, which contributes to the headphones weight of 310g. That’s more than the Bose QuietComfort 45 (240g); Sony WH-1000XM4 (254g) but nowhere near as heavy as the AirPods Max (384g).

The headband is lovely and cushioned, as are those slightly smaller earcups (Image credit: Future) Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2: design and features Scintillating sound quality, style and comfort make the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 SE top of their class. This is Bowers & Wilkins and, as you'd expect, these over-ears certainly look and feel the part –plus, the USB-C charger can also be used to listen to wired music if your phone sports a USB-C connection (we did this with our Samsung Galaxy S21, no Bluetooth required). You get a USB-C to 3.5mm cable in the box too, in case you want to use them with source devices such as MP3 players, all of which adds value at the level. B&W might have made its name with hi-fi speakers, but it's now a major player in the wireless headphone market. The Px7 S2 and Px8 are two of its finest models. Both offer great sound quality, useful features and excellent build quality, but the Px8 are the standout pair. The way the Px7 S2e fit is fantastic, albeit sometimes a little slung forward across the hairline after longer periods of wear and wandering about, and the comfort is supreme: memory foam-filled leather that's opulent and soft sees to that (these are seriously cushy earcups, believe me).

What does the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 sound like?

The comfort factor is good with these headphones. I have a big head and some headphones feel like they are squeezing me. These even after 4 hours of wearing them today haven’t felt like that. They do get hot inside; when I did take them off my ears thanked me. Each mode seems worthwhile and effective, whether we’re applying ‘low’ to distance ourselves from overly chatty co-workers or using ‘high’ to drown out plane or train clatter. The degrees of isolation, and the peak levels of seclusion, aren’t as sophisticated as the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphone 700’s superlative system is capable of, but nonetheless the PX7s do the job admirably. Instead, they exude just the right amount of bubbliness – like a fizzy drink at optimum effervescence – ensuring your music is as entertaining as it’s designed to be.
